Black-backed Jackal

Canis mesomelas

Size: Up to 45cm high
Habitat: Savannah and plains
Feeding: Mammals, reptiles, insects and carrion

The Black-backed Jackal, also called the Silver-backed Jackal, is a fox-like scavenger. The coat is red/brown with a black and silver back. The tip of the tail is black.

They have a lifespan of 8 - 10 years.

These photos were taken in the Masai Mara, Kenya. We watched one of the jackals catch a Scrub Hare and wait for its mate to join in to share the feast.
