The Malachite Kingfisher is one of the most distinctive kingfishers. It has bright blue plummage on its head and wings. The underparts are orange and it has a large red beak. There are small white patches on the neck and throat. The legs are red. The sexes are similar.

It hunts from a branch low over the water, diving to catch its prey.
