Common Sandpiper

Actitis hypoleucos

Size: Up to 20 cms long
Habitat: Marshes, swamps and wetlands
Feeding: Insects, crustaceans and worms

The Marsh Sandpiper is a small, migratory, wading bird which over-winters in Africa.

It is brown/grey in colour with white underparts and a white shoulder patch. It has a long beak and short, dark legs and feet.

It has quite a distinctive walk with its head and tail bobbing up and down.
