Topi

Damaliscus korrigum

Size: Up to 1.2m high
Habitat: Plains, grassland and open woodland
Feeding: Grass

The Topi is a fast antelope which is very similar to the Coke's Hartebeest.

It's colouring is a darker brown than the Hartebeest and it has purple patches on the thighs. A good way to remember it - "wears blue jeans and yellow socks". Both sexes have horns and slightly straighter than the Hartebeest.

As can be seen in the second photo, the youngsters do not develop their purple markings until they are a few months old.

It has a lifespan of 10 - 12 years.

These photos were taken in the Masai Mara, Kenya.
