Cicada

Cicadidae

Size: Up to 5cm long
Habitat: Tropical with vegetation
Feeding: Plant sap

There are thousands of species of Cicada throughout the world. They are more often heard rather than seen. It is the Cicada that makes the loud insect noise at twilight in tropical places - a huge amount of noise considering their size.

It is a large flying insect with fine membraneous wings and large eyes set apart on its head. It is harmless to humans. However, they can cause damage to crops, shrubs and trees.

Some people eat Cicadas, usually fried. Rather them than me!

These photos were taken in the Okavango Delta, Botswana.
